About GuideStar
Inspired by astronomical guide stars—laser systems used in observatories to create artificial stars—GuideStar features an array of vibrant, primary-colored laser beams projected into Seattle’s night sky. The beams are accompanied by slow-moving, ambient music that surrounds the Space Needle, creating a fully immersive experience.
This installation transforms Seattle’s iconic landmark and its surroundings into a dynamic canvas of light and sound, inviting audiences to reconnect with the night sky—and each other—through a shared sensory journey. Commissioned by Wa Na Wari and supported by Cornell University’s Mui Ho Center for Cities, GuideStar represents a convergence of art, technology, and community engagement.

Quote from the Space Needle
“We are so excited to host GuideStar and watch Mendi + Keith’s artistic vision come to life,” said Randy Coté, Chief Marketing Officer at the Space Needle. “GuideStar is a shining example of how art can illuminate our world. We can’t wait to share this experience with Seattle as winter comes to an end. We are grateful to Wa Na Wari for proposing this amazing collaboration.”
