Staying interconnected with our ancestors is a foreign concept for most. Yet in truth, we maintain a connection to our ancestors in our own personal ways that we may or may not be aware of. Cultivating a strong spiritual connection to our ancestors has been a very important focus for Voodoo, Santeria and Hoodoo practitioners. As Black people, it is not widely known that our ancestors walk with us all the time. Slowly, we are gaining our ability to seek out and be with our ancestors in our own individual modalities.
We Lost People: Diasporic Departure is an altar that honors that journey back to your ancestors. A safe haven for those who are looking or trying to find their way back to their roots.
We Invite Black folk for a night of honoring our ancestors and past loved ones in the activation of the piece We Lost People: Diasporic Departure by Berlynn Beam and Chase Keetley of Black Arts Vancouver.
The Altar is a space to grieve and celebrate those who we have lost these past few years and to be able to reach them through offerings and prayer. This installation is a representation of the collective existence of our foundation. A physical place where Black people can gather and feel sustainability and permanence. We encourage you to bring a candle for yourself and offerings to place on the altar for your ancestors and or loved ones. We will be doing a mass prayer when it gets dark enough.
Peace be with you
