Brandon Donahue-Shipp

“Downtime”

Brandon Donahue-Shipp said, “This recent body of work is inspired by my first year of parenthood and Trisha Hersey’s book, Rest is Resistance. My intention is to share moments of comfort, reflection, healing and recovery in “our home” on the east coast in Baltimore over to Wa Na Wari “our home” in Seattle. In these works, family home photos are collaged with bright, digital airbrush t-shirt scraps from my 24-year experience as a custom airbrush artist. Palm trees, sunsets, and bodies of wavy water are used as metaphors for paradise. The works take the form of life sized standees, often used to promote movies, products, events, or increasingly for point-of-sale advertising.”

“TableTime”
“This body of work is inspired by the multi-purpose space of dining room tables along with the research study of ‘contact zones’ by Mary Louise Pratt. Pratt describes “contact zones” as social spaces where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other, often in contexts of highly asymmetrical relations of power, such as colonialism, slavery, or their aftermaths as they are lived out in many parts of the world today. As digital collages printed on foam board, I use the element of contrast to position the hands performing everyday tasks on sports courts and fields.”
